Djoke or Djoker?

Novak Djokovic has now captured the career grand slam by beating Andy Murray in the finals of the French Open.  The comparisons with all the tennis greats have already begun, but let’s take a step back and look at just this French Open.

No Roger Federer or Rafa Nadal, who has more French Open Titles than anyone.  I know that neither of them is at their peak right now, but that is just two more guys that could have gotten in the way of this title for Djoker who couldn’t.

The ATP is a little on the light side of top tier talent right now and Djokovic is reaping that reward.  I think that he is one of the best players ever, but I don’t think his career numbers would be nearly as good as if he was playing at the peaks of some other stars careers.

It’s clear that nobody is consistently challenging Djokovic right now and until somebody does the tennis world will not be a priority in many peoples minds.  This French Open is the first Grand Slam event I can remember that I didn’t watch a single point of any match. I just felt that there was always something better to watch and that bothers me.

I like Tennis.  I think it’s a great sport, but it is losing it’s luster and sadly the longer the American(men) continue their dreadful play, the smaller the American fan base will become.  Here’s hoping that something changes quickly.
